| Plastic surgery
of the ear
Otoplasty is the name given to the operation
designed to “pin back” the ears. While
otoplasty can be performed at any age, it is most
commonly done in childhood.
Otoplasty is performed through incisions along
the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage.
Portions of the cartilage are repositioned and
permanent sutures used to maintain the correction.
The skin sutures are self-absorbing and the patient
is cautioned to protect the ears from injury for
a few weeks. Some bruising and swelling can be
expected, but usually subsides within a week or
so, significant pain is rare.
The risks are minimal and will be discussed with
the surgeon.
